34 Years of Liberation: A Personal Tribute to Kuwait (Celebrating Kuwait Liberation Day)
On February 26, 1991, at 9:01 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, U.S. President George H.W. Bush spoke from the Oval Office at the White House and said,

“Kuwait is liberated. Iraq’s army is defeated.”

In Kuwait, 8 hours ahead, it was 5:01 a.m. on February 27—a dawn breaking after a long night. It was the end of a brutal chapter.

Six weeks earlier, he’d launched Operation Desert Storm—a massive military campaign with airstrikes starting January 17, 1991, followed by a lightning-fast 100-hour ground offensive—to drive out Saddam Hussein’s forces. That day, Bush halted the fighting and declared,

“Tonight, the Kuwaiti flag flies above the capital of a free and sovereign nation.”

With nearly 30 countries behind him, he’d turned the tide. February 25th and 26th carry that history—National Day for independence under Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, and Liberation Day for that victorious moment. These days have a strong connection to Kuwait and have become an integral part of my own life here

Kuwait my second home

My journey with Kuwait began through my mother, who has worked here for nearly 9 years. She arrived after the invasion, seeking better opportunities, and over the years, she’s shared how this country grew and flourished from those tough times. Growing up in India, I visited Kuwait as a child and felt the warmth of its people. Little did I know this land would call me back.

My wife, who grew up here, deepened that bond. Her stories of life in Kuwait built a sense of home in my heart even before I came here.

My father-in-law witnessed it firsthand

Kuwait’s liberation was born from struggle. It started when Iraq, led by Saddam Hussein, invaded on August 2, 1990, claiming Kuwait as its own. Overnight, the country was plunged into chaos—sirens blaring, food scarce, darkness everywhere as power failed.

My father-in-law lived through it, and his stories still echo—the fear, the uncertainty, but also the hope that refused to die. That hope sparked into action when Operation Desert Storm kicked off. After months of occupation, Kuwait was finally freed on February 26, 1991, when the coalition forces crushed Iraq’s grip and sent them retreating. For those who lived it, it was more than a military win—it was life reclaimed.

My new job in Kuwait

After 8 years at Infosys in India, an opportunity in Kuwait brought me here in February 2020. It wasn’t just a job—it felt like a homecoming. As I complete 5 wonderful years here this February, I’m so grateful to God for all blessings I have enjoyed in this land.

I’m especially grateful to Ali Abulhasan, CEO of Tap Payments, for the opportunity to grow as an Integrations Consultant at this pioneering startup, driving online payment transformation in the region.

Joy amidst Covid crisis

Since arriving, I’ve met beautiful people who’ve enriched my life. Just a month later, as the world went into lockdown, I found myself confined to an apartment. During that uncertain time, my firstborn came into the world—an unforgettable joy amidst the chaos. Both my children were born in Kuwait, tying me to this land even more.

Kuwait today!

Today, Kuwait stands tall as a symbol of resilience and progress. The scars from Iraq’s invasion are long gone, replaced by a nation that welcomes people from everywhere. As an expatriate, I’ve felt the kindness of its people, the richness of its culture, and the opportunities it offers—opportunities like the one at Tap Payments, where innovation meets everyday life.

More Than a Workplace

For many like me, Kuwait is more than a place to work—it’s a home that’s embraced us with open arms. National Day and Liberation Day remind us of the struggles Kuwait overcame—starting with that invasion in August 1990, fought back by Desert Storm in 1991, and won on February 26th—and the bright future it’s building. They’re about freedom, unity, and a spirit that never quits.

Thank you Kuwait!

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Kuwait and its people. Thank you for giving us a home away from home. To my fellow expatriates, let’s always respect and cherish this country that’s given us so much. And to my Kuwaiti friends, may your nation continue to prosper in peace and harmony.

Happy Kuwait National Day and Liberation Day! Let’s celebrate freedom, unity, and the enduring spirit of this beautiful country.
